The school was named not only for its academic achievements, but also for its outstanding performance in comparison with similar schools.
Mrs Mercer, acting Headteacher said, "Naturally we are delighted that our recent OFSTED inspection has earned us this accolade. Despite being a small school, we have excellent resources, superbly dedicated and very supportive staff, pupils, parents and governors, which allows us to deliver first class education to our pupils and we are thrilled that OFSTED has noted and appreciated the results we achieved".
On 15th Feburary 2000, The Leighton Buzzard Observer printed the photograph and caption:
SCHOOL IS NAMED ONE OF THE BEST IN ENGLAND
This achievement was made under the leadership of Mrs Anna Sims, Headteacher from 1994 until her retirement in 2000. As the school moves forward into the 21st Century, the school's success continues with Mrs Melanie Mercer, Headteacher, and staff Mrs Lee, Mrs Markham, Mrs Prickett (recently retired), Mrs Ware, and Mrs Wood achieving a second year of appearing in the top 5% of schools in the country.
