The Bells

Samuel Pepys wrote about the Church in his diary.

"At night at Newport Pagnell....A very fair and like a cathedral church, and I saw the leads, and a vault that goes far underground."

Pepys described the Church as cathedral-like. Certainly, it is unusual to find an impressive ring of 8 bells in a small town church. Five date from 1749, but all were recast in 1911.

In 1762 Joseph Eayre of St. Neots placed a carillion of 8 different tunes in the tower, but these fell into disrepair and were silent until they were repaired as a Jubilee memorial in 1887. They were replaced by 2 new barrels playning 14 different tunes. A new semi-tone bell was presented by F.J. Taylor and inscribed

The Church Bells
"The eight old bells that hung around

Invited me to add my sound

The National Anthem help to play

With other tunes both night and day

And thus Victoria Jubilee

Remembered evermore may be."
