The Need for Widening
Since its opening in 1959,traffic on the M1 between J10 and J15 has increased by 600%! Traffic flow has been continuosly recorded and increasing since its opening and in 1993 a report was written recommending the widening of the M1, between J10 and J15, to 4 lanes in each direction.

Rush Hour

Studies have shown that the peak hours have lengthened since 1985, now lasting from 6am-9am then 4pm-6.30pm.This is because of the lack of capacity on the M1 has caused some journeys to been undertaken earlier.

Light Relief

In 1992 the M40 Motorway was opened between London and Birmingham bringing a reduction in traffic flow on the M1 of 3% to 8% (not that you would notice).
