Since its opening in 1959,traffic on the M1 between J10 and J15 has increased by 600%! Traffic flow has been continuosly recorded and increasing since its opening and in 1993 a report was written recommending the widening of the M1, between J10 and J15, to 4 lanes in each direction.
Rush HourStudies have shown that the peak hours have lengthened since 1985, now lasting from 6am-9am then 4pm-6.30pm.This is because of the lack of capacity on the M1 has caused some journeys to been undertaken earlier. |

Light ReliefIn 1992 the M40 Motorway was opened between London and Birmingham bringing a reduction in traffic flow on the M1 of 3% to 8% (not that you would notice). |
