At the old School, swimming was mainly an after school activity, (though the school closed for the annual swimming gala which took place on the last Thursday in July). They used the 'Spinney Pool', a disused sand pit ,which had an area sectioned off for non swimmers known as the 'Crib'.
The boys taught each other to swim. Viv Willis recalls that at 6 years old, when he learned to swim, he was assigned three boys from the school to teach to swim, this had to be done during the evenings and at weekends. |
