We also know from the Northants Place Name Society that the name Yelvertoft comes from the Viking "topt" meaning homestead and an English persons name such as Geldfrith or possibly Geldwine. Yelvertoft was on the edge of the part of the country under the rule of Scandinavian invaders ( Danelaw ) which was marked roughly by the Watling Street ( A5 ) as are most of the Parish boundaries in Northamptonshire which are next to the road.
Yelvertoft Field Names also have English and Scandinavian origins which means they may have been named over 1000 years ago. In the 1920's it was noted that some areas of Northampton had poor amounts of records on field names but picked out four places on which they were "exceptionally full "Welton , ,Harlestone , Weedon Lois , and Yelvertoft !
