The Ferguson TE20 known as the "little grey Fergie" is said to be "the machine that revolutionised farming". Its designer Harry Ferguson pioneered a three point linkage arrangement allowing the implement and tractor to be attached and work together as an integrated unit. Before this system if the plough became caught in a tree root tractors would flip backwards and most farmers, fearing this, would not change from their horse. Because of the efficiency of the three point system little weight is transfered from the implement to the tractor allowing it to be smaller and lighter therefore minimising damage to the fields.
The TE20 was produced at the Banner Lane factory in Coventry which was built in 1938. The next model the FE35 was known as the "grey and gold" Ferguson although bigger was very simular to the TE20. It was made from 1950 to 1957 until the factory owners argued and it was discontinued. The three point linkage system is still the standard system on most tractors today. |
