In 1880, the Swan was nearly destroyed in the Great Fire on June 8th, shown here on the left of the photograph. The building that was completely gutted was the former Saracen's Head. There was extensive fire damage to the Swan and the facade was replaced with the one we have today. | ||||||||||||

Did you know?
There is a Jacobean staircase in the upper storey of the building that survived the fire. The wooden staircase is now hidden under layers of paint, and would probably collapse if any attempt was made to strip these. |
