Many famous people have stayed at the Swan. Some have liked it, some have not. Samuel Pepys, the diarist, stayed on June 8th 1668. He wrote
"At night at Newport Pagnell and there a good pleasant country town with but few people in it......Lay here well and rose next day by four o'clock and so away. Reckoning for supper 19/6, Poor 6d. Mischance to the coach but no time lost." This contrasts with Mrs Sarah Siddons, the famous actress, who recorded in 1796 "Here I am sitting close, in a little dark room in a wretched little inn, in a little poking village called Newport Pagnell." Charming! |
