Mr Reg and Mr Cecil became part of local folklore. They retained the Edwardian appeal of the shop - its looks, its smells and above all its courtesy.

Indeed Mr Reg was still serving behind the counter shortly before his death at 93, having been with the firm for 77 years.

He served in the territorial Army as a young man, was in the guard of honour at Queen Victoria's funeral and was badly wounded in France in the first world war.

He later became a special constable and was with the Observer Corps in Hitler's war.

His feats of strength were legendary and his civility to customers impeccable.

Mr Cecil was more studious looking. He played chess and was, like his brother, a member of the town fire brigade for many years. That was when it had its steam pump housed in what is now a carpet store opposite Woolworths.

Two brothers with different characters but with a common aim to serve their customers with respect and undivided attention - qualities that came as a most pleasant surprise to strangers to the town.

They were not used to having someone turn out half the store to find just the right screw, the right door lock or the right handle for that favourite garden fork.
