In it's heyday the Grand Union Canal was important to the town of Fenny Stratford. There were several brickyards, the best known being owned by Gregory Odell Clarke. As well as being a brick and tile maker, he also set up business as a coal, timber, slate and iron merchant and also owned the Tan Yard Wharf. The site of the wharf is now a development of small business units known as Wharfside. The picture below shows the old warehouse building on the left. Faint outlines in the brickwork where the crane offloader once was can just be made out. Clarke's brickworks was sited on the opposite side of the canal opposite the warehouse building. The red brick building in the background of the photo is The Bridge public house. |
