Air Raid Shelters

Some men in the village started to make The Mound by the church into a village air raid shelter. This was never completed. The villagers were also concerned how long it would take them to get to the shelter from the other side of the village.

One lady can remember her father making a shelter in the garden. It was a wooden hut half submerged with steps leading down into it. They only used it once because it was "cold, damp and horrible".

The family decided, "If we're going to be bombed we'll be bombed in bed"

Other families had a cellar and this was used as an air raid shelter.

Anderson Shelters

The government also made Anderson Shelters for people to put up in their gardens.
