LARGE STOCKS OF BOOTS AND SHOES DESTROYED
Whilst the three Brigades were pouring volumes of water on the burning building- 800 gallons per minute passed through the hose of the two visiting brigades- a large and willing band of workers were rescuing furniture from the threatened cottages, and under the most difficult and dangerous conditions carrying on very useful and commendable salvage work at the factory itself. We were informed that approximately 5,000 pairs of boots and shoes and footwear in an uncompleted stage were saved. But the fire it is estimated destroyed 3,000 pairs of boots......

Whilst the fire was in progress sparks alighted on the thatched roof of a cottage near to the Queen Hotel, 100 yards away, but the firemen quickly averted any danger threatened from this direction.

Due to insufficient finance the factory was not rebuilt.
