FIREMEN HANDICAPPED BY OBSOLETE AND USELESS APPLIANCES.
The Olney Fire Brigade, under Capt. E. J. Wiffen, were called, and though they made a smart turn-out it was soon discovered that their obsolete fire appliances were quite incapable of coping with a fire of such magnitude. The hose, fitted with the out- of- date screw couplings and leaking badly at intervals, and the manual, worked by 18 volounteers who stripped themselves to the waist and pumped heroically, were unable to make any noticable impression on the fast spreadind flames. The firemen did their best under conditions of serious handicap. for some years they have been pressing the Parish Council to equip the Brigade with more modern appliances......

The Brigade found an inexhaustible supply of water in the Whirley Pits, a huge pond fed by unfailing springs, at the junction of the Wellingborough and Midland roads. Their difficulty was such that it was found necessary to summon by 'phone the Newport Pagnell and Wolverton Railway Works Brigades with their powerful appliances..................
