The Romans and Little Brickhill
Watling Street was built by the Romans. Down the hill, toward Fenny Stratford, by the River Ouzel, was a substantial Roman settlement, Magnovium. Roman remains have been found at various sites in the area. Recently, the skeleton of a Roman solider was found when the Little Brickhill bypass was being built, and remains of a villa, and coins were found near the junction of the Fenny Stratford Bypass (previously Galley Lane) and the A5. Urns containing Roman coins were also discovered in Holts Green, Great Brickhill.
It is probable that Little Brickhill was always a local settlement serving Magnovium, but it probably gained more importance when the Romans left. When there was trade to be done many people passed through the town using Watling Street.
