Meanwhile, in 1842, William Keep purchased an old public house called the Chequers. This had previously been called the Six Bells and became Chequers around 1762. He rebuilt the premises. John Odell bought the property in 1858 and built Blair House at the back in 1859. This became Odells the ironmongers.
The accommodation included the shop, living quarters upstairs, a warehouse, storerooms and a basement where you would find tin smiths, blacksmiths, an enamelling oven, 2 forges, chimneys that went straight up through the property and a large water tank in the warehouse to collect all the rainwater. |
