Newport Pagnell
A Welcome Break
The reputation of Newport Pagnell as a place for travellers heading to the North, to break their journeys, can be traced back to the important strategic position that the town held during the English civil war in1643.

Fears that the Royalists would beseige the town in order to cut off one of the main supply routes to the North, meant that Newport Pagnell became a garrison town. However Newport Pagnell was never beseiged and the garrison was disbanded in 1645.
