The Congregational Chapel was first established in 1662. The present chapel was built in 1792 and a new frontage built on in 1832. The interior was refurnished in 1897to seat 160. Till 1903 there were square oak pews , these were replaced by seats in pitch pine.
A Sunday School was started in 1807 to teach the three Rs, with 59 pupils in the first year.
In the Chapel yard is the grave of Thomas Plimsoll, father of Samuel, of Plimsoll Line fame, who died in 1844.
One of the most devoted servants of the Chapel was Walter Palmer, builder , who died in 1942 in his 80th year. For nearly sixty years he was both Chapel Secretary and Sunday School Superintendent. |
