Edward Alfred Mertagh Stevens was born on 24th June 1898 in Formosa China.
He was the son of Edward Stevens who was the Harbour Master of Foochow in China and Marion.
He was educated by the Rev. Gornall at Yelvertoft Rectory from 1906 to 1913.Then he went to Oundle school from 1913 to 1916, where he was a leader of his house.
At his army medical he was described as being 70 inches tall and weighing 145lbs.
Rev Gornall was the person in the U.K. who was responsible for paying the £35 towards the expenses of his uniform boots etc. when he joined up.
He was in the 6th Battalion of The Buffs (The East Kent Regiment) He was a second Lieutenant and he was awarded the Military Cross on the 15th January 1918 at Fleurbaix.
He was killed in action on Tuesday 16th June 1918. He was killed at 1p.m. at the entrance to the company dug-out by a 15cm shell. (originally the date of his death was given as the 18th of June.)
He was 20 years old.
He is buried in the Harponville Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme , France.
