After about 18 months billeted in Wingrave, Cherry-Anne and Lisbeth's parents rented a terraced cottage behind what is now the Old Mill House in Winslow Road.
There was no running water - drinking water was drawn from a well in the yard and washing water came from a water butt. Baths were once a week on Fridays, and there was an outside bucket loo.
Inside, the house was damp - Cherry-Anne remembers the wallpaper falling off the wall and sometimes giving off electric shocks.
Although these conditions fall far short of today's housing standards, Cherry-Anne and Lisbeth recall a happy and healthy home life.
