Hilda Mead was born in 1877 and lived in Nup End Lane Wingrave. At 2 years 10 months she attended the Hannah de Rothschild Infants School and then continued at the Parochial School until she was 13. She then went back to the Infant School as a pupil teacher, gained her teaching certificate and taught there for 10 years. In 1904 she married William Roberts and they had two sons - Harvey and Leslie. She played an active role in village life notably in the W.I and in her beloved Methodist Chapel. She wrote extensively about village characters and childhood memories. She died in 1962.
