Kelham Rood

SSM HOME PAGE
The central feature and crowning glory of Kelham Great Chapel was the life size sculpture of Christ with St Mary and St John on the Rood . It is the work of the late Sargeant Jagger and was completed in 1929. Sargent Jagger was also the sculptor of the artillery memorial at Hyde Park Corner in London.
Sargent Jagger served in the First World war and it is believed that the Rood reveals his preoccupation with the problem of suffering. The Rood is considered to be the best piece of work by Sargent Jagger
When the SSM left Kelham in 1973, the Rood figures were taken down from their lofty arch and brought to Willen. The Rood is now in the grounds of the Willen priory garden.
