After Malborough, William went on to Clare College, Cambridge and obtained his BA in 1860. While at university he was an accomplished sportsman. He played rackets for Camb 1858, played cricket for Cambridge and then for Middlesex in 1862, 64 and 68. He went on to become a clerk in the Board of Control, and afterwards in the India Office as a Precis Writer and Assistant Private Secretary to Sir Charles Wood, Lord Cranborne and Sir Stafford Northcote as well as Private Secretary to the Duke of Argyll. In 1866 he married his cousin Edith Mary, daughter of Edward Benthall, of the Bengal Civil Service. They had a son, Henry Everett in 1867 who was baptised at Willen Church. His daughter Edith was born and died within a couple of weeks at Willen.
