Cranfield Aerodrome
Whilst researching for our website on Salford, we came to realize that Cranfield Aerodrome had a large impact on our small village during the war years. It played a major part in the RAF's war time effort, and with its close proximity to Salford it affected the community in quite a lot of ways such as the servicemen who stayed in the village, the locals who worked up at Cranfield and also why the village was bombed during the war!

Cranfield Aerodrome
Cranfield established as an RAF airfield in the mid 1930's. After the First World War, the number of RAF squadrons had been very much reduced. But with the programme of rearmament initiated by Adolf Hitler in Germany, intelligence reports had estimated that the Luftwaffe would have almost 600 front line aircraft by the end of 1935. This persuaded the government of Britain to strengthen the RAF.
