The heroism of a railway brakesman named James Bates averted a terrible disaster on the Bletchley to Banbury Branch line of the London and North - Western Railway on 19th April 1909.

This picture was taken in 1904 of the'Waverley' No 806 and the Bletchley station staff. It was built in 1863 and took part in the Euston to Crewe race with an average speed of 53 mph.
