Newport Pagnell Fire Brigade was founded in 1855 through the concerns of a number of local residents, and in particular Mr Edward .J. Saunders a local Bank Manager. A committee was set up with Mr W .R. Bull a local Lawyer as Chairman.
On the 7th December 1855 at the Swan Hotel in the High Street a meeting took place in which Mr Richard Sheppard a local Architect & Surveyor, was appointed the position of Captain and Mr Edward Croydon of the Croydon Weekly Standard(a local newspaper) became SecretaryAbout 20 more Firemen were initially recruited these included paid and volunteer firemen. The first Engine House was originally down the Jetty of North Square. The engine was later housed in the old council yard in Newport Pagnell.
