SPECIAL ROADS ACT 1949
The coming of the motorways to Britain really began back in 1949 with the passing of the Special Roads Act.

For the first time in the history of British transport restrictions were placed upon the users of particular routes. The new rules included no stopping on the highway, no parked vehicles, no learner drivers, no reversing or U turns and no cyclists.
