The Last Radio Days

Sometimes, when England had been broadcasting, the German authorities would recognise British transmissions and announce, "The enemy is broadcasting counterfeit instructions on our frequencies. Do not be misled by them. Here is an official announcement of the Reich authority......" This was very useful for the British broadcasters as they simply copied the Germans. "The enemy is broadcasting counterfeit instructions on our frequencies. Do not be misled by them. Here is an official announcement of the Reich authority......". They then carried on with the propaganda message they wanted to send originally. Gobbels gave up trying to stop the British broadcasts, but also stopped sending out orders and announcements. This was a great inconvenience to the German authorities.

Some of the information gained by Sefton Delmer and his colleagues was gathered from prisoners of war. Sefton Delmer had scouts at British prisoner of war camps that would let him know if they spotted any German prisoners who might have fresh information. Other information was gained by reading smuggled in German newspapers or listening to German radio shows. The information was then interpreted and made into convincing news stories.

The Atlantiksender and Soldatensender radio stations were shut off on April the 30th 1945. Harold Robin took a copy of the last two days of broadcasting. These are held in the sound archives at the Imperial War Museum. The Aspidistra was still used to send out some remaining shows and later became used for the B.B.C World Service. Aspidistra was finally closed down in September 1982. Harold Robin flicked the final switch.
