From the beginning......
1881 An interesting entry in the log book for May 23rd 1881 states that "The trustees of Wilkes Charity gave two bread rolls to each boy in attendance this morning". This appeared to be an incentive to get the boys to attend school.
1900 approx. We have been told that boys in the early part of the century, toasted bread in classroom 5. This process came to an abrupt halt when the blackboard "pointer ", used as a toasting fork, was burnt. The improper use of school property came to Mr Currie's attention and he stopped the fun.
