Sand-trays
As Beaudesert School was situated in a sand producing area the sand-trays were a very practical and cheap writing system. The sand-trays, which ran along the back wall of the classroom, were 6 inches wide and 2 inches deep. These trays were used by children to practise forming each letter from the alphabet. No child could progress to slates until they could produce all the letters to the master's satisfaction.
During this time a monitorial system was also used at Beaudesert.
